Managing the Employment Lifecycle
After years of working within the Agricultural sector and with a number of Employment Law changes on the horizon, we have designed a series of workshops designed to address the most pressing employment challenges facing Scottish Agriculture; employing and managing staff. The series is designed to bring operational managers together and offer a forum for sharing experiences, learning from HR professionals and exploring innovative strategies for managing staff effectively. It will offer invaluable insights and practical solutions for recruitment, retention and staff development through three key workshops.

More Detail on Each Workshop
Workshop #1: Planning to Attract the Right People
How do you get the right person, who wants to work in a rural area, with the right attitude and set of skills, and the capacity to navigate the changes happening in agriculture?
In this session we will look at how we define the "right person" for our business, how we attract suitable candidates and present the co-op effectively through social media and other platforms. We will engage in hands-on practical exercises to develop effective job descriptions, fair recruitment practices, interview techniques, expectations of on-boarding and references, attractive remuneration and benefits packages, all concluding in the contract of employment.
Workshop #2: Planning to Retain the Best People
The employment lifecycle isn't just about the start and the end but about how we manage the middle. How can we effectively invest in our people so that we retain the best?
In this session we will look at Day One rights (current and future changes) to understand the legal implications, duties and burdens that the employer has to abide by. We will then spend time engaging in hands-on practical exercises to develop strategies to effectively manage an employee throughout their career with the co-op, this includes managing performance, delivering effective feedback, having challenging conversations, managing conduct and disciplinary issues, hearing and managing grievances, and managing absence and attendance issues.
Workshop #3: Planning for Employee Transitions
When we've reached the end of the road, we want to ensure that our actions are legal and fair to the employee, so how do we do that?
In this session, we will look at the different ways employment may come to an end, whether through retirement, redundancy, capability, health or conduct. We will consider the proactive steps that can help make the process as conciliatory and simple as possible for all parties, actions to remove potential friction wherever possible. We will spend time reviewing the different termination options, working through case studies and discussing the required actions to conclude an employee’s relationship with the business.
